Press Release

The School of the Arts, with the assistance of Academic Magnet High School students, is presenting its sixth annual Rockumentary Concert, “I Want My MTV: Songs of the Early 80s.  The concert will feature nineteen arrangements of songs from Blondie, Tom Petty, Billy Joel, Culture Club, The Police, The Talking Heads and others, while fitting each song into a historical and cultural context.

The performance will involve everything from acoustic trios to multi-piece electric rock bands. The cast of performers will include twenty-five SOA students, six AMHS students, and SOA instructors John Cusatis and Rhetta Foster. The show will conclude with the entire ensemble performing “We Are the World,” with the piano accompaniment of SOA Principal, Dr. Shannon Cook.

The concert will take place in the Rose Maree Myers Theater on the SOA campus on Wednesday, May 24, at 6:30 PM.  It is a free concert with donations being accepted for the Rose Maree Myers Scholarship for Artistic Excellence.

We will perform the show a second time on the deck of The Pour House, 1977 Maybank Highway on James Island, also at 6:30 PM, on Saturday, May 27. This show is also free. Attendees at both shows will receive a free, full-color, 12-page glossy program.

Applause, SOA’s official student publication and the main sponsor for the event, created the $1,000 RMM Scholarship in 2010 –in conjunction with the dedication of SOA’s state-of-the-art theater– as a tribute to SOA’s founder, who pioneered and dedicated her life to arts education in Charleston County.  The scholarship is awarded to a senior who embodies the indispensable value of an arts-integrated education. This year’s scholarship will be awarded at the show on May 24, and thanks to the generosity of patrons and advertisers, we have raised the scholarship stipend to $2,500.
